Upgraded imaging technology to benefit Mayfield patients

A new era of patient care launched at Mayfield in early January with upgraded imaging technology that enhances the speed and precision of whole-body X-rays.

Called the EOSedge, the system was installed at Rookwood in December and started serving patients January 5. It weighs more than 3,500 pounds and features low-dose radiation imaging, further protecting our patients. The existing imaging machine will be installed in a new procedure suite in the West Chester office.

Continuous vertical scanning allows the new system to create a single whole-body image, eliminating the need for stitching several images together and increasing accuracy. Mayfield is the first provider in Greater Cincinnati to offer this technology for adult patients.

“The new imaging system means better care for patients because our surgeons and other providers get one full body image of our patients,” CEO Mark Vorherr said. “This allows our surgeons to plan holistic, and comprehensive, diagnosis and treatment. In addition, patients in the region’s northern communities will not have to travel to Rookwood for X-rays. These kinds of significant investments advance Mayfield’s mission of providing the best neurosurgical care to our patients, just as we have done for 85 years.”

Patients stand in the new system’s open cabin for their images. Once in position, it can take as little as 30 seconds to produce a full-spine image using the new technology, a significant time savings. It also produces both frontal and lateral images at one time.

“It just takes away the potential for errors with spine images,” said TJ Powell, a radiologic technologist in the Rookwood office. “It is fast. People comment on how quickly it goes … Plus, they think it looks cool.”
