Local, independent ownership has always been one of the strengths of Mayfield Brain & Spine, and two Mayfield physicians have become shareholders of the region’s leading neurosurgery practice.
Dr. Robert James became a shareholder in January 2024, and Dr. Zachary Plummer was elected in July. Both started at Mayfield in 2022. Mayfield now has 21 surgeons, and 15 of those are shareholders.
“Dr. James and Dr. Plummer are accomplished clinicians who will enhance the legacy of Mayfield Brain & Spine, now and in the years to come,” said Dr. Andrew Ringer, chair of Mayfield’s Board of Directors. “In their short time here, they have demonstrated excellence in clinical care, education and research, with the innovative spirit that Dr. Frank Mayfield envisioned when he founded our independent practice in 1937.”
Dr. James specializes in neurovascular care, including strokes, brain aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations. He sees patients at Mayfield’s Northern Kentucky and Rookwood offices, and performs surgeries at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, Good Samaritan Hospital, The Jewish Hospital-Mercy Health and Bethesda North Hospital. He earned his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in neurosurgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center and a fellowship in open cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
“Mayfield Brain & Spine has differentiated itself by its fierce independence and commitment to serving patients with excellence,” Dr. James said. “We have provided superior neurovascular care for generations, and I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together.”
A fellowship-trained neurosurgeon, Dr. Plummer specializes in complex spinal disorders and minimally invasive spine surgery, with particular expertise in the treatment of complex spinal disorders, including scoliosis, revision spine surgery and degenerative spine conditions. Dr. Plummer sees patients at Mayfield’s office in West Chester and performs surgeries at the Mayfield Spine Surgery Center, Mercy Health – Fairfield Hospital and The Christ Hospital.
Dr. Plummer earned his medical degree from the Indiana University College of Medicine. He completed a residency in neurosurgery and a fellowship in complex spine surgery at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. His education and training include experience on medical mission trips to Mongolia, Nepal and Tanzania.
“I am excited to join the Mayfield ownership group that has provided amazing stewardship of this premier independent neurosurgery practice,” Dr. Plummer said. “For me, there is no higher calling than a physician helping patients live better lives. I am confident Mayfield will meet that challenge for new generations of patients.”
