Opened 15 years ago as one of the nation’s first independent freestanding centers giving patients a valuable option for outpatient back surgeries, the Mayfield Spine Surgery Center continues to grow today.
Mayfield Spine Surgery Center:
- Patient satisfaction rate of 97.93% in 2022
- 20,217 spine surgeries since opening in 2007
- 67,361 interventional pain treatments
- Developed originally by Mayfield physicians. Currently owned by United Surgical Partners International in partnership with Mayfield physicians, and operated by USPI.
Patient service is the focus at the ambulatory center along Interstate 71 in Norwood, with physicians performing more than 20,000 spine surgeries and 67,000 interventional pain treatments since opening in 2007. And patients like the experience at the center, with the patient satisfaction rate improving to nearly 98 percent this year.
“The success of the Mayfield Spine Surgery Center represents Mayfield innovation at its best – finding solutions that serve patients and support providers,” said Dr. Brad Skidmore, a Mayfield neurosurgeon and chairman of the Surgery Center Board of Managers. “As Mayfield providers, we were confident that a world-class outpatient destination would be a valuable option for patients and would enhance the Mayfield brand. Today, the surgery center has accomplished that and more.”
Mayfield neurosurgeon Dr. William Tobler served as chairman of the Board of Managers from 2010 to 2021 and as medical director from 2006 to 2009. Neurosurgeon Dr. Steven Bailey, who currently serves as medical director, said complex spine surgeries may still require hospital stays to ensure patient safety and monitor outcomes. But Dr. Bailey said patients love having the option of the outpatient center for minimally invasive surgeries because it allows them to recover at home while still receiving the most advanced care.
“Using the latest technology and surgical innovation in a patient-friendly environment allows us to give each of our patients the best possible outcome,” Dr. Bailey said. “They know they are receiving excellent care from the talented and highly qualified medical team at the Mayfield Spine Surgery Center.”
Physicians and nurses at the surgery center treat patients needing procedures that do not require an overnight hospital stay. Advances in minimally invasive spine surgery during the last two decades have dramatically decreased the time patients spend recovering in a hospital, instead allowing them to recover at home. As technology has evolved, allowing more hospital care to move into the outpatient setting, ambulatory surgery centers have launched all over the country to capitalize on the trend.
When Mayfield opened the freestanding surgery center in 2007, it was among a few such facilities in the region and the only one operated by a private practice and not a larger health system. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, there were 5,935 Medicare-certified ambulatory surgery centers in the U.S. in 2020, up 16% from the year before.
“At the Mayfield Spine Surgery Center, patients receive personalized care that allows them the best chance for a successful procedure and recovery,” said David Orskey, administrator of the center.
