Spreading Depolarizaton

Finding a way treat people who have suffered a traumatic brain injury is a major goal for researchers in the Mayfield-affiliated Department of Neurosurgery, and in 2011 they were awarded $880,115 in grants from the U.S. Department of Defense to pursue research in that area. The funds were awarded for several projects, including development of a new generation of brain monitoring and research into spreading depolarizations.

Both of those efforts are led by Jed Hartings, PhD, Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery and Director of Clinical Monitoring for the Mayfield Clinic.

Lori Shutter, MD, Professor of Neurosurgery and Neurology and Director of the Neurocritical Care Program at the UC Neuroscience Institute, is the lead researcher overseeing the role of the Department of Neurosurgery and University Hospital as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder/Traumatic Brain Injury Clinical Consortium Study Site. The Study Site award provides funds for infrastructure and personnel.
